It will be no surprise for me to say that once again - my husband has found something unusual for me to post for a Saturday with Steve. This past Wednesday he took off for a day to fish - he had been wanting to do so ever since we returned from Disney but with his mom in the hospital simply did not feel he could take off any day and leave. So he finally got his much needed relaxation time this past week. Now he loves to go to the mountains however this time he only went as far as Upshur county and the Buckhannon River:

and he was successful with his favorite - native brown trout

and the brook trout:

Now both of these were released back into the water because he was so far up the stream that he didn't have the heart to keep these to eat and wanted to leave them there. So while he is way up on this river fishing he comes up on two men working to replace railroad ties on the Beech Mt. Tracks. So ofcourse, those of you that know him - he stops to "chat" awhile and asks to take pictures - first off removing the ties

Now remember - two men and this machine and that's it - what a load of work. Well, then when the new tie is put in they have to hammer in the spike to hold it in place:

Now Steve wanted to know how many "strikes" it takes for this guy to get the spike in - and that is going to remain a mystery until someone tries to guess that today - give me your guess at how many times he had to swing this sledge hammer to get the spike in - if you guess it correctly - I'll send you a gift for guessing. So, once again - Steve also asked if he could take a try at it :

Now - how many times do you think the fella told Steve he had to hit the spike to get it in - remember this may or may not be correct - Steve did not count (I'm betting the number was not correct) but you give me the count that you think it took Steve to get that railroad spike into the tie. I am curious to see if anyone actually gets this correct. If you guess correctly, I'll let you know and I have a few retired stamp sets you might want to choose from!
You also need to know that these two men also run the train, as well as repair it - it is used primarily for a coal mine there, so it seems that these two men are probably pretty busy. So how about this? My husband's first time at working on the Chain Gang!!! If only I knew how to put the background music to that old song on here. Well, be sure to make a guess - first how many times it took the employee to hammer the spike in and then how many times it took Steve to do the same. That's all for today's Saturday with Steve - have a great Holiday week-end.
